Pan-Thy-Monium is, hands down, the most intriguing project of Swedish metal wizard Dan Swanö. Swanö's other projects range from the straight-up death metal of Bloodbath to the prog-death of Edge of Sanity to the cheesy AOR-metal of Nightingale, but it's Pan-Thy-Monium that sees him at his most experimental and "out." This band combines the death metal aesthetic — distorted, crunching power riffs and throaty growls instead of conventional singing — with squealing sax and ethereal keyboards, all encased in a self-contained mythology around the god Raagoonshinnaah (I'm not making this up; the liner notes contain many lines of gibberish describing this mythology).
